Evan’s Story

When Evan Sky’s mother passed he was 11 years old. To cope, he turned to music, and has never looked back since.  Early on, he became inspired by some of her favorite artists like Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder.  He quickly became a multi instrumentalist obsessed with songwriting; picking up guitar, piano, bass and drums at an early age.  He took private lessons on several instruments, including jazz guitar lessons for several years with the jazz guitarist Nat Janoff.  In school he played the clarinet and bassoon, frequenting all county bands as a standout student.  Beginning with recording music into GarageBand on his iPod, he started releasing his own instrumental music independently in high school, and soon afterwards developed his own unique vocal style.  Inspired by the whispery vocals of Elliott Smith, the lush vocal compositions of Brian Wilson, and whatever else he was listening to at the time, Evan made his debut in 2015 releasing an EP called “Big Boy Hours” on bandcamp.

Soon after graduating high school, he moved out of his parents house, and while attending Suffolk County Community College, his music quickly became a sleeper hit in the DIY Long Island underground indie/punk scene, with several bandcamp exclusive releases through 2017. Though he received scholarships and acceptance to several NY state schools including SUNY Potsdam and Fredonia, his financial situation made furthering his formal music education impossible.  After graduating Suffolk with an Associates of Arts degree in Music, he worked odd jobs to support his passion for music, and continued to write whenever he could, releasing a string of EPs on all major platforms from 2019-2020 to reflect the seasons of Summer, Fall and Spring.  After gaining traction in the local scene as a live performer, the pandemic struck.

During the height of the pandemic, he moved from Long Island to Upstate NY at the beginning of 2021, where he quickly entered the local circuit regularly playing open mics, bars, and other venues as a solo performer and with several bands of varying styles, one of which he formed to play his own music live.  There, he cowrote and produced a single for singer-songwriter Rachel Slotnick called “Male Manipulator Music”, released in early 2022 as his first production/mixing credit.  This went on to become his first production to exceed 1000 streams on Spotify.  During his time in Binghamton, NY, he began learning the ins and outs of working with Logic Pro and took his mixing and production to the next level, culminating in the release of his debut LP “The Adventures of Sky and the Hipster Cult” on Halloween of 2022.  This album featured an eclectic blend of surf rock and folk rock featuring jazz, classical and punk influences.  He has done several full band and solo performances in Upstate NY and on Long Island in support of this album.

At the beginning of 2023 he moved to Maryland, where he has begun teaching guitar, piano, and drum lessons privately.  There he continues to write as much as possible and refine his mixing/mastering abilities.  He returned to the live music scene with the release of his new single “Red Tape” in June of 2023 which features fellow Long Islander, Maida, as a cowriter and vocalist.  This upbeat folk rock tune features crisp vocals and harmonies, a shreddin’ guitar solo, and a strong message about bureaucracy tinted through a window of emotion.  Shortly afterwards, Evan released his EP. “Awkward Surf Songs”.  This collection of quirky surf rock tunes showcases his most focused and professional production yet.  Following several solo performances in bars across Long Island, Evan put together a release show for this EP with a full band backing on 12/30/23 at the legendary Amityville Music Hall.  This full set was filmed professionally and is available for the world to see on Youtube.  With momentum from the success of this show with attendance upwards of 100 people, Evan continues to write and record for his second LP with his friends, which has yet to be titled.
